Kenya is endowed with a vast network of natural water resources that are suitable for fish
farming. The country has experienced a rapid growth in aquaculture production mainly from
culture of Nile tilapia and African catfish. The rapid growth of aquaculture production has been
largely attributed to intensification of culture systems. As human populations continue to grow,
the effect of aquaculture’s footprint will also grow and lead to ever greater concerns over issues
such as environmental degradation, climate change, energy sources, and food security for the
Kenya populace. Addressing these emerging problems require adherence and implementation
of Good Aquaculture Practices (GAqPs). GAqPs are defined as a series of considerations,
procedures, and protocols designed to foster efficient, responsible aquaculture production
aimed at ensuring final product quality, safety and environmental sustainability.
The purpose of this booklet is to enable stakeholders in aquaculture industry in Kenya to
sustainably produce quality fish and find information on best management practices (BMPs).
